A poster presentation at the 5th annual SIRC conference drew international attention from the Hispanic media. SIRC Director, Dr. Flavio Marsiglia and Monica Parsai were interviewed on May 18, 2007 by Maria Leon of the EFE news agency. EFE is the fourth largest Spanish language news agency in the world covering Hispanic issues. The interview was promptly featured by: Yahoo News en Español, Latino MSN, Vida Nueva from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Terra Noticias, El Sentinel of Florida, La Noticia en Detalle from Chile and La Opinión out of Los Angeles.
Monica Bermudez-Parsai, MSW, is the Project Coordinator for the Latino Acculturation and Health Project (LAHP) at Arizona State University's Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center. The LAHP project, a collaboration between ASU and the University of North Carolina,Chapel Hill, is a longitudinal study that examines the role of acculturation in the mental health and substance use of 300 Latino families in Arizona and North Carolina. Monica’s close involvement with the Arizona families inspired her interest in examining the levels of hopelessness and stress experienced by the Latino immigrant mothers.
The study "Factors associated with hopelessness among Hispanic mothers", completed under the guidance of Dr. Flavio F. Marsiglia, Dr. Stephen Kulis, and Dr. Hilda Garcia-Perez, was presented at the SIRC annual conference on April 20, 2007 in Phoenix, AZ. The study examines relationships among depression, parent-adolescent conflict and hopelessness. Findings suggest that the mild to moderate levels of hopelessness reported by 14% of the women in the sample were more often evident in those who were depressed or were experiencing conflict with their adolescent children in the household.
